In 1988 Shao En received the Lord Rhodes Scholarship to study at the Northern Conservatory of Music in the UK. In the same year, he won a scholarship from the Edward Van Benum Foundation. In 1989, Shao En won a prize in the 6th International Conductor Competition held by Hungarian Television.Then series of concerts were held in cooperation with the Hungarian National Symphony Orchestra. In 1990, he became the assistant conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1992 to 1995, he served as the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Northern Ireland Orchestra. Together with the orchestra, he made his debut at the Walk Concert in August 1995.

As a long-term Chinese conductor in the UK,Prof.Shao En has also successfully conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scotland Symphony Orchestra, BBC Wales Symphony Orchestra, etc.
In addition, he has also cooperated with the Danish Tivoli Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. 
Prof.Shao En also frequently visits the United States, Canada, cooperates with orchestras in Colorado, Toronto, and Vancouver, and has visited South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand etc.

He is director of the Conducting Department of China Conservatory of Music and principal Conductor of the Chinese Symphony Orchestra.
